The basis for arranging a new international cooperation is a specific interest in cooperating with an international partner. This has to be communicated by one or various institutions of TU Dortmund University. The authority and significance of a preceding letter of intent may differ from the eventual agreement. A “Letter of Intent” or a “Memorandum of Understanding” are statements of intent and can be seen as a prestage of arranging an international faculty or university cooperation.

International faculty and department cooperations are advisable, if just one faculty or department is interested in cooperating with the department of an international university.
Which criteria have to be met for the arrangement of an international faculty and department cooperation?
- Appropriate partners are preferably internationally well-known and prestigious institutions,
- Sustainability: the cooperation has to be sustainable for at least three years,
- Guarantee of an at least medium-dated/medium-term perspective of funding,
- Programmed academic, lecturer, and student exchange (bound to subject)
Which steps of procedure are necessary for arranging an international faculty and department cooperation?
The presidency (Rektorat) is authorized to conclude the contract – under the direction of the Office of International Relations (Akademisches Auslandsamt) – in cooperation with the participating faculties or departments. The Office of International Relations also counsels about third-party funding.
The following documents have to be presented at the Office of International Relations:
- a short report explaining the realized and planned activities,
- a draft agreement (coordinated with the international cooperation partner) modelled on the model contract,
- a short description of the partner university,
- a document with names and addresses of contact persons or persons in charge of the cooperation on either side (complete contact information including email address),
- a confirmation about the acceptance of the cooperation by the particular faculty director or head of department.
