TU Dortmund University is well-connected to various institutions of higher education in the United States. Apart from the exchange of students and faculty, numerous research collaborations have been established.
Along with two official university partnerships with Iowa State University and the University of Southern California, TU Dortmund maintains a number of bilateral exchange agreements with US institutions. In addition to that Dortmund is a member of ISEP (International Student Exchange Program). This membership allows our students to choose a placement at one of the more than 200 ISEP member universities. Dortmund exchanges students with one university in the US (Georgia Institute of Technology) within the framework of the ISAP-program sponsored by the DAAD. The following institutions have signed student exchange agreements with our institution:
Compared to other universities in the Ruhr area, TU Dortmund University has a leading position with regard to student exchange with the US. The city of Dortmund becomes increasingly popular as a study destination for US students among our partners. This year the interest of American students to come to Dortmund was almost as high as the desire of Dortmund students to study in the States. Within the US-exchange-program, jointly organized by the Office of International Relations (Akademisches Auslandsamt) and the American Studies Department, more than 40 students go abroad each year in order to spend one or two semesters at one of the partner universities. The total value of scholarships which are awarded every year is almost $ 400,000. The exchange of Teaching Assistants with the University of Iowa, the University of Virginia, Oglethorpe University, and Hamilton College has been continued. The partnership with the University of Iowa, Iowa City deserves a specific mention since it is a university-wide, interdisciplinary cooperation.
Within the field of research TU Dortmund maintains academic cooperations with the United States in the departments of computer science (University of Illinois) and mechanical engineering (University of Pittsburgh). Funding is provided by the National Science Foundation. The collaboration between TU Dortmund University and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is embedded in the regional cooperation of Dortmund and Pittsburgh. The Letter of Intent, signed by both universities, covers academic cooperations in the following subjects: engineering, computer science, chemistry, economics and social sciences, and architecture.
